Everyone certainly has their own way in solving the problem, but many of them assume if there is an obstacle, so nothing can be achieve. The viewpoints that are used by most people are just not applicable for the duo Septian Harriyoga and Mira Franciska. Based on their problem from the bright sky that suddenly turns dark and wet, Tian said, “Every time I wanted to take pictures of clouds, why the sky always turns cloudy? I then thought, why do not I just make a cloud. ” Almost the same with Mira’s problem when she needs to decorating outdoor events with lighting, then suddenly rains comes – all chaotic. Originated from the idea, finally crates the most genius artworks results which will be introduced to public this Christmas. Developed from the notion, duo artist who come from different backgrounds – Tian is a sculptor and Mira as lighting designer, they managed to unify their concepts into 3 basic elements, which are Flickers, Flakes, and Feathers.

In the exhibition which was held at the Portico Senayan City, 9 December 10, 2010, this duo engaged Articulation as organizer, where the receptacle aspiration here have a desire to assist people in the country to support the Indonesian artists creation that give the true meaning of the final result of an artwork served with a dash of playfulness. Displayed in metal material frames size 100×100 cm with 1 millimeter thick, Tian utilizing his ability as a sculptor to create a cloud installment that portrays in every photo works. Therefore, whether the sky is cloudy or rainy, he would obtain a picture of the cloud. His works that are displayed yesterday titled as Awan dan Awan, Awan Padang Lalang, Awan Pada Biru, and many more. The uniqueness of exhibition is not stop only in the photographs that appear like paintings sweeten in every corner Portico cafe, but also displays inimitable works of Mira. When entering the Portico and see above will seen Snowflakes which Mira creates to substitute the snow in this rainy season, wrapped with goose feathers which tight against water, the light emitted by the snowflakes spread warmth in all over cafe. Continue seeing the back area of the cafe, visitors would be amaze when notice on the left side of outdoor area what else if not the artificial cloud masterpiece made by Tian. This sculpture cloud standing upright with blue light like stars underneath integrates with other flickers of light that creates romantic ambiance. Overall, this exhibition definitely infinite, playful, and blend like the motto of Articulation and out of people imagination.

Art, one word with a gazillion meaning that shrouds it; ranging from the jolly sing-along Sound of Music, to the more obscure and dark of Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet Street -all render to the same roots despite the unpredictable outcome, the art itself. If one ever stated to be people of art, how far can one proof the allegiance towards it? Will one sacrifice uncountable nights and days to invent a Magnum Opus of a lifetime based on the unfair government systems they must abide, or creating an instant play during a 24 hour period? Sure, some of the Hollywood folks do, since a decade ago.

The various featuring talent for the time may sound familiar in our head, like the wife of Russell Crowe in his most recent movie, The Next Three Days, Elizabeth Banks, grown-up boy wonder Elijah Wood, to the one and only Gloria Estefan, was more than enough to curb the art craving by their “instant” acts. A little background check for the show, unlike any show which gone through a rigid and ruthless rehearsals, the shows liven up to the name by only allowing the members of the show to write, direct, and perform in just 1440 minutes to wrap it all. As The 24 Hours Plays on Broadcast began ten years ago, it always been sort of commemorative labor of love (Art) for the individuals who joined the one-day-only parade, and to be noted, the show also act as a tribute for Lennon, and his memorable music legacy that sways the heart of the listeners. The tribute does not only cover one part out of the six plays they served that night, but also goes beyond that. The sponsorship of Montblanc also creates a special edition of the writing instrument in the name of Lennon to help immortalize not only the music and verse, but also the unyielding strive to acknowledge and preserve the world of art.

The show that was held inside the American Airlines theatre this past November 9th in New York’s Great White Way leaves quite an astonishing effect. Astonishing not due to the fact that it’s filled by formidable performers of various stages in entertainment, or the fact that the 24 hour period is the challenge into making the show last that long, but it’s astonishing due the fact that everyone who’s involved in the play did it for the sake of the art itself. So when the question is posed, “Do you love art?” people may nod and almost instantly say yes – just like Ugly Betty actress America Ferrera answered when asked, but how far will one push themselves to create something artfully educational as the cause? The answer once again lay inside the depths of one’s heart. [Images courtesy of Montblanc / image.net]

Bulgari supports the 4th Asia Pacific Screen Awards

Children are our future and we feel that education has the power to transform lives. Yet access to a quality education is very limited for the 72 million children of primary school age who are not in school. Said the Chief Executive Officer of the Bulgari Group, Francesco Trapani. It’s through that reason alone that famed luxury jeweler, Bulgari, has taken a big step in helping this educational cause over the undeniable frightening concern over children’s education. In collaboration with the 4th Annual Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA), one of the most prestigious events to celebrate film making in the Asia-Pacific region, Bulgari announced that on December 2nd they will be on hand to support the 2010 Best Children’s Feature Film at the 4th APSA event, featuring works intended for children up to the ages of 16 from New Zealand (Boy), Australia, (Bran Nue Dae), Hong Kong (Echoes of the Rainbow), Islamic Republic of Iran (The Other), and from India (Udaan).

Working together with the global humanitarian organization, Save the Children, Bulgari will pledge a commitment of $8 million by introducing a new must-have item worthy of the silver screen. The silver and ceramic ring with a glistening Save the Children stamp on the inner circle of the ring marks Bulgari’s commitment in the cause. Not veering off from the theme of cinema and charitable causes, the jewelry brand has recruited one of Hollywood’s great, Isabella Rossellini, as the spokesperson of the collaboration.

Shot by photographer Fabrizio Ferri, Isabella Rossellini is joined by many other famous faces such as Ben Stiller, Willem Dafoe, Julianne Moore, Jessica Biel and even footballer Ronaldinho just to name a few, to promote the ring in the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. “I support the fundraising campaign that Bulgari created in support of Save the Children, lending my face, along with many other celebrities, to Fabrizio Ferri who shot us all wearing the silver ring.” Rossellini shared. This collaboration is not unheard of before. Bulgari’s association with the highlight of Hollywood dates back to five decades ago, in the heydays of Elizabeth Taylor shooting movies in the 1950s. Although the glittering accessories and glamour of the silver screen is undeniably the main draw to this effort, one concept shall outshine it all. “Each year, the films in the category of Best Children’s Feature Film open our eyes to the experiences of children across Asia-Pacific, many of whom are affected by conflict and natural disaster.” Said chairman of the APSA, Des Power. My hope is that through APSA and Bulgari, this year’s nominees and jury will take the Save the Children message back to their own countries and that together, we can affect some change for the future. [Images courtesy of Bulgari and the 2010 APSA]

John Lennon is undeniably one of the most iconic musical legends of the 20th century. His contribution to the arts didn’t stop at just making beautiful music with the infamous The Beatles, his talent reaches deep into writing, drawing, and is the consummate activist of peace. In appreciation for this multi talented man, Montblanc honored the great by launching the Montblanc John Lennon Limited Edition of writing pens. In conjunction with this launch, Montblanc initiated a global event that took place in New York, Berlin, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Mexico City on September 12. The brand known for its cultural understanding launches three special version of writing instruments, the Montblanc John Lennon Limited Edition 70, the 1940 Commemorative Edition, and one design to celebrate the musical era of the ‘50s and ‘60s – the golden years of The Beatles. This also marks Montblanc participation into a selected charitable event to keep Lennon’s dreams alive. Joining its power force for the greater good, Montblanc sponsors the John Lennon Education Tour Bus, a mobile recording studio for young people throughout the US to be given a chance to learn, compose, play, perform and then record musical art. The John Lennon Education Tour Bus is also supported by will.I.am of the Black Eye Peas, Natasha Beddingfield and even Yoko Ono herself.

This prestigious collector’s piece of the John Lennon Limited Edition 70 are only limited to 70 pieces, a number to commemorate his 70th birthday. Encased in a transparent precious blue resin the design was inspired by Lennon’s own trademark round blue glasses while a 750 white gold encircles the writing instrument’s exoskeleton styled with the word “Imagine” – the one song that transcends the message of peace and love. The nib of the pen bears a self-portrait signature of the singer himself while the cap bears three diamonds placed as the chord of the celebrated song. This tribute definitely has touched a core to the late singer’s partner Yoko Ono for she commented that she is delighted that the beautiful and unique writing instrument was created by Montblanc to honor John Lennon’s legacy. She further revealed, “He was a creative force who loved drawings and writings and the power of words and art so I know this would mean a lot to him.” Lennon always had faith in humanity and this just marks that we as a society should send him all the peace and love, where ever he may be.
Lots of guys want to swing with a call girl like Bree (so true) … One guy just wants to kill her (say what now?). Such is the slightly modified tagline for the movie Klute (1971) which I think best described every man’s fantasy when they saw Fonda for the first time—well, except for the last part of course. Many said that the movie should have been named Bree instead since she practically outshine everyone else with her portrayal of the strong yet vulnerable call girl who is unwillingly persuaded to help a detective named Klute (Donald Sutherland) to track down serial killer. Actually, other than the title, there’s another change that should have been made: the movie would probably work better as a romance drama (however twisted) since it had been successful in developing a very complex characterization of the street smart Bree. Her session with a shrink—which is said to be improvised—is very powerful and honest as it elucidates her character’s motivation. For that scene alone, no wonder she won the best actress award at the 1972 Academy Awards.

And I really have to mention how sexy she look in the movie wearing either sweater, blouse, or bathrobe … sans bra! The Women’s Liberation era spearheaded by feminist groups has been around since the 60s and its fashion moments had its start from designer Yves Saint Laurent who created a sheer blouse worn with no bra that is meant to give women the freedom to express themselves sexually, unhindered by antiquated social norms of the 50s that requires them to be prim and proper, to be a fully dedicated housewives. (The era is best instilled—and parodied—in the movie The Stepford Wives.) But the spirit reverberated, however marginally, in Klute where Fonda is always sashaying confidently around town with a no bra sweater. And it seems that her character definitely represents feminist at its best: outspoken and fashionably unconstraint.

And of course writing about Jane Fonda without discussing her workout video would be the same like not discussing being blonde with Pamela Anderson. As she crossed the 40 line in the 80s she managed to reinvent herself as a fitness queen with the release of her aerobic video series which became a instant hit with women across the globe, and I should know since my mother owned one of her videos. (You can still catch Fonda in her glorious workout getups on YouTube.) She butt-tones herself all through her 50s and it shows in the movie Stanley & Iris (1990), a romance drama with Robert DeNiro in which one critic commented that for a 50 year old struggling factory worker she looked—unnaturally—fit. It’s too bad that the last movie she starred in after a 15 year hiatus was the super silly and feather-weight comedy Monster in Law (2005) with Jennifer Lopez, though I like to think that she takes on the project just for the sake of having fun after years of toiling in serious roles. Mind you, her last comedic role was the 1968’s surreal sci-fi sex comedy Barbarella, a movie which was directed by her then husband Roger Vadim and which propelled her to sex kitten status (well, she did perform a highly titillating zero gravity striptease). Serious or not, she’s still the girl everyone’s like to swing with and she is clearly beloved …

The 64th Tony Awards dazzles the Great White Way.

It might not be the Academy Awards, the Grammy Awards or the Golden Globes, but The Antoinette Perry Awards for Excellence in Theatre or better known as the Tony Awards is as prestigious as any other award. Awarding excellence to the creative force behind some of the most influential Broadway performances, the 64th Tony Awards that was just held on June 13, 2010 at Radio City Music Hall, New York City, brings the same glitter and glamour on stage and on the red carpet. This year’s Tony Awards has been dubbed one of the most liveliest award show due to the fact that the opening number of the show brings together the best in music from punk music, Frank Sinatra songs, Afrobeat rhythms and early rock ‘n’ roll. Hosted by Sean Hayes of Will & Grace fame, the show brings together the best of silver screen actors like Cate Blanchett, Scarlett Johansson, Denzel Washington and Will Smith, among others, as presenters and nominees of the night. It wouldn’t be Broadway if the Tony Awards was not filled with dazzling performances. Rising television star and Broadway veterans of their own right, Matthew Morrison and Lea Michelle of hit television series Glee, sang a Sinatra song All I Need is the Girl and Don’t Rain On My Paraderespectively.

Uprisings of new creative direction in Broadway are in abundance this year. New plays and musicals such as Fela!, American Idiot (a musical based on Green Day’s album of the same name), In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play), and Red (which took top honor of the night as the Best Play) combines the love of our current social issues and pop culture. Revivals of the classics also play a part as La Cage aux Folles took home three wins and Fences who also took home the same number of wins including an award for its leading actor, Denzel Washington as the Best Leading Actor in a Play. Some say the theatre is a dead end in the entertainment world, but with these names winning top accolades at this year’s Tony Awards, you shouldn’t count out the stage plays and musicals – just for fact that they sometimes can also rock!
