Kelly Rowland at the MTV Staying Alive Foundation Gala Dinner

We’re not ashamed to admit that Kelly Rowland is our favorite member from the group formerly idolized as Destiny’s Child. Although she rarely appeared in the trio’s choreography and didn’t take as many solos as Beyonce, Kelly was always the one who stood out the most. Why? Well, it’s simply because she always has her hair cut short. We also know that Kelly is a true fashionista. Her front row styles are always chic and she possesses that calm beauty that’s always poised. At the MTV Staying Alive Foundation dinner gala, she not only showcases her ultimate beauty, but she also took center stage at the event. Hosting and performing for the event that honored the career and life of MTV’s Chairman and Chief Executive of MTV Networks International, Mr. Bill Roedy, Kelly Rowland was definitely the center of attention in a stunning floor-length black dress.

The unknown label of this dress was just simple gorgeous on her fit and toned body. As you can see, her sleeveless arm bears a sculpted form and the dress itself forms a sleek line throughout her body – now that’s how every form fitting dress should look like! We’re a little apprehensive about the sleeve under the flounce of her other shoulder, maybe if it weren’t there at all, the top part of the dress wouldn’t look so much like a sports top – but Kelly wore it with such elegance that we’re willing to overlook that one flaw from the dress. Completing her look with a pair of glittering chandelier earrings and an animal print pair of shoes (look closer and they’re just peeking from the dress), the whole look was glamorous but not over the top. Her side swept bangs was neatly styled to not be a distraction from her flawless makeup (which made it look like she’s not wearing any at all!). Different from its counterpart; the sunglasses, a pair of glasses are synonimous with a certain style lable: geek chic. This stereotype enducing items are a common thought when you’re thinking of scientists, programmers, librarians and many other profession that you might consider as nerdy. But stripped down from any types of occupations – nerdy or otherwise, are a pair of glasses a turn on or the opposite? I wear a pair myself and I’ve gotten mixed reviews from friends of both genders. Some of the girls think I look smart, but the guys think I look too smart. Other girls say that without them I look pale (even though I’m an advocate for dark eyeliners and/or the smoky eyes look, without a pair of my glasses, they say I look pale – sickly, even!), and other boys say that I look better wearing them. It’s safe to conclude that some men consider that a person wearing glasses are intellegently intimidating, while some women considers that glasses are an accessory of necessity to define how someone looks.

Despite the various designer brands who constantly supplies eye wear of the non sun visored style, I don’t see a lot of people rocking the look of geek chic as a staple item. It’s just another pair of accessories to complete the look. It’s safe to say that glasses might not be as fashionable as the labels thinks it should. But wether it’s fashionable or not, I didn’t ask this – I asked if a pair of glasses are sexy or not. For the sake of argument, let’s say that the sexiest woman/man you could think of in the world (generally speaking Megan Fox for the dudes and James Franco for the ladies) wears a pair, would you think of them even more sexier? Do they become more sexier because they are already in that sexy category or does the glasses make them even more so?  Another point that would be obvious is that a pair of glasses are not the same as lacy lingerie or a well-made Italian suit – so obviously glasses should not be synonimous with the label of “looking sexy”, and yet it still does anyway. As anything else we ascociate with beauty, it is in the eye of the beholder so the jury still could not come up with the verdict. You know what I think, what do you think?

Karolina Kurkova at the latest Berlin Fashion Week

There’s no denying that there wouldn’t be a fashion week without any models, but the appearance of a supermodel – now that’s a whole different matter entirely. Appearing as the latest ultimate face of Mercedes Benz for the Mercedes Benz Berlin Autumn Winter 2011/2012 Fashion Week, Czech-born model Karolina Kurkova lit up the cold winter day of Berlin with her effervescent smile. Attending several different shows in the runways of Berlin Fashion Week, Karolina totally played it save in a sweet Azzedine Alaia LBD. We’re always surprised when a model (and of her caliber no less!) shows up to a fashion event wearing something borderline boring – aren’t models supposed to be friends with fabulous stylists all over the world? Or is this event not important enough for Karolina? Despite the fact that she is the new face of the main sponsor of the event, we would expect a little more pizzazz to her own ensemble. It’s understandable that Berlin Fashion Week is less hoity toity than Milan or Paris, but it wouldn’t hurt to glam it up a little, no?

Not all was lost – despite her lack of effort to her ensemble, we do love Karolina’s fresh look. The key look in which she stars in for Mercedes Benz took glamazon to a whole new meaning – it’s super fierce! The photo  was shot by renowned fashion photographer Craig McDean and he has successfully made Karolina Kurkova anything but blah. Winter hasn’t even begun melting into spring and yet, the fabulous fashion crowd in Berlin has already served up its latest fashion offering for the Autumn-Winter 2011/2012 collection through the Mercedes Benz Berlin Fashion Week. One collection that is the front runner of the Berlin catwalk is most definitely A. Friend – A.F. Vandevorst’s second line specially shown in this fashion week. The duo of Filip Arickx and An Vandevorst are known for creating A.F. Vandevorst’s signature style for the ultimate modern urban warrior. A. Friend doesn’t differ much from the main line’s Paris shows. Always covering the model’s faces with their own sleek hair, A.Friend delivers an unassuming collection that is more than meets the eyes. Focusing all presentation value strictly to the clothes on the model’s body, there’s the aura of quiet reverie in which the details are ever present.

Expect the next wintry season to be heated up by shades of dark maroon, earthy brown, hot red and the friendly monochromatic shades of grey and black – making it all key items to make the snow melts faster. The appearance of long gloves upped the ante from the era of lost glamour and proving that no matter how casual the outfit might look, that simple pair of gloves added to each outfit from A. Friend’s collection made a big statement of the importance of the right accessories. The loose silhouette created by light rayon and cottons, combined with several pieces of weightless knitwear presents the familiar style of warmth. Not relying on heavy items like full on head-to-toe leather to showcase straight edge form in dressing, this collection is the correct example on how to look effortlessly stylish.  They say a good friend will always stay with you, but A. Fashionably casual Elle Macpherson at the IWC Boutique in SIHH 2011

Who’s forty seven years young, a supermodel and an all around fabulous woman? Elle Macpherson of course! The Aussie model and actress showed up at the IWC boutique at the International Fine Watch Makers Exhibition or the SIHH in Geneva, Switzerland. Showing up with a bright and confident stride, a bright smile, and relaxed feel, the beautiful Elle wore a tight fitting leather pants which makes us in the SwankPolice Headquarters wonders if we would be looking as fabulous as her when we’re in our forties. Pairing the look with a nautical blue and white long sleeved t-shirt and a biker-girl worthy leather jacket, it’s really nice to see this casual look is definitely something that’s natural for her. Things took a turn to the sexy when we see Elle’s feet are clad in a sexy red lace up booties to make that “I’m here!” statement. The aviators? A nice touch to top off the whole look. We can’t think of anyone who looks this good at being casual, can you? Gwyneth Paltrow at the Baume & Mercier Gala Event in Geneva

When we first saw this picture of Gwyneth Paltrow at the Baume & Mercier event, it was the first time our SwankPolice squad has ever been doubtful of our ability being a team of Fashion Police. Remembering this article by our friend, the Swank Observer, we’re not sure how we feel about Gwyneth Paltrow in this lovely Azzedine Alaia ribbed pink ruffled dress. On the other hand, this Academy Award winning actress is no stranger to being iconic in the color. The dress she wore at the award ceremony in which she received the highest achievement in film was a simple pink princess dress designed by Ralph Lauren that has taken a unforgettable impression to fashion watchers everywhere. Not to mention, she recently covers many big named magazine’s covers in pink cowgirl-ish ensembles to promote her newest movie, Country Strong.  Pairing her dress with a hot pink Pierre Hardy peep toes made the look even extra sweeter – but is this good or bad? We really couldn’t decide if this is a good look or not because there are so many factors that would make this look work and some that doesn’t. Something is definitely off. Is it the hair?
