The Power of Pearls
Text by:Priska Andrini | Published: 27-Apr-2010
Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Coco Chanel, Jackie Kennedy, Michelle Obama – those are just the few iconic names that has become fashion icons with their timeless style. But then, what part of their look that becomes the part that put those women in a style stratosphere higher than other names? The answer would be the strand of pearls that decorates their necks and accentuate their looks. Through the most memorable character that she has played in movie and fashion history, Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly made the little black dress AND the pearl necklace an instant chic look that’s timeless. Nowadays, the two look goes hand in hand as a Birkin bag on the hand of a celebrity. Grace Kelly used a shorter strand selection of pearls, before and after she became queen of Monaco. The Godmother of Fashion, Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel, introduces the long strand pearls when she first started out the famed fashion house as a staple look next to her famous tweed suit designs. When Jacquelyn was a Kennedy (before she was an Onassis), she has kept up appearances with her prim, proper and pill box hat look, and always three strands of pearls. A new trendsetter, first lady Michelle Obama has also included to this type accessory in many of her looks; on magazine covers, state affairs, and international visits alongside her husband. Other notable appearances of pearls in history would be in Johannes Vermeer’s Girl in the Pearl Earring – and who could forget when Scarlett Johanssen played that part in the movie rendition of how the painting was created.

What sets the pearl necklace apart from any other type of precious gems is that pearls are not as bright as rubies or diamonds, but it has a quiet elegance from the lustrous color nonetheless. From the color and luster itself gives an approachable look to luxury. Although to acquire an excellent quality pearl accessories you would need to shell out a lot of money or wait until your great grandmother would inherit one for you, it doesn’t stop the fact that you can find a pearl imitation from your favorite retail shops. Mother of pearls imitations can also give an update to your look and give that instant chic oomph that you always need – just be sure to take good care of it. So the next time you’re in the market for a little black dress, a pair of black stilettos, or another staple item to your fashionable wardrobe collection, don’t discount the power of the pearl necklace.
